From 1 September 2026, the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme opens to commercial and industrial battery storage for the first time. If you run a business in NSW, a significant portion of your battery investment may now be offset.

What's changed


Commercial batteries, finally included


Until now, the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme (PDRS) supported homes and small installations only. Commercial-scale battery storage sat outside it entirely.


From 1 September 2026, two new activities change that. BESS4 covers business sites with usable battery capacity above 20kWh and up to 200kWh. BESS5 covers larger commercial and industrial systems above 200kWh.


All four of the commercial systems we install fall under BESS4, which carries a simpler equipment and compliance pathway than BESS5.

How the incentive works

It isn't a fixed rebate

The PDRS pays through Peak Reduction Certificates (PRCs), not a set dollar figure. The value depends on your system design and the certificate market at the time of install.

Your system is assessed

Eligible capacity is calculated as 90% of your battery's nominal capacity, then capped at four hours multiplied by your inverter capacity. Both numbers matter, which is why inverter sizing is part of the design, not an afterthought.

Certificates are created

That eligible capacity generates Peak Reduction Certificates. As an accredited installer, we handle the creation and assignment process so it doesn't land on your team.

Value comes off your cost

The certificate value is passed back to reduce your upfront investment. Because PRC prices move with the market, we confirm the current position at quote stage rather than promising a figure in advance.

Eligibility


What your site needs


Most NSW business and industrial sites will qualify. The key requirements:


  • Installed on or after 1 September 2026
  • A NSW business, commercial or industrial site
  • Battery installed behind the meter
  • Usable capacity above 20kWh
  • CEC-listed equipment, installed to AS/NZS 5139
  • Installed by an SAA-accredited installer
  • Site has not previously claimed BESS4 or BESS5
  • Solar is optional, but new solar increases the incentive

Each pairs a three-phase inverter with commercial battery storage. The right one depends on your demand profile, available switchboard capacity and site constraints — which is what the site assessment is for.


What the site assessment covers: A standard install assumes single-storey roof access and a straightforward mount. Two-storey roofs, lift access and tilt frames add labour, so we confirm those on site.

Commercial Options


If your site already runs solar, we quote the battery on its own and tie it into the existing array. If there is no solar, or not enough of it, we quote the battery packaged with a new system, which lifts the incentive. Each battery has a minimum solar size for that packaged option, shown below. If the roof cannot take the minimum, we quote the battery on its own.

Minimum new solar for the packaged option: 12kW with Option 1, 15kW with Option 2, 28kW with Option 3, 50kW with Option 4. If the roof cannot fit the minimum, the job is quoted as battery only against the existing array. Lift or elevated work platform hire, two-storey access and tilt frames sit outside standard scope and are quoted per site.

  • How much is the rebate worth?

    There isn't a fixed figure. The PDRS pays in Peak Reduction Certificates, and their value depends on your system's eligible capacity and the certificate market price at the time of installation. Because that price moves, we model it against current values at quote stage rather than advertising a number that may not hold.

  • Do I need to install solar as well?

    No. Battery-only projects are eligible, and if you already have solar we simply connect the battery to it. Projects that include new solar alongside the battery attract a higher incentive, because the scheme rewards the combined demand reduction. Each system has a minimum new solar size for that option, which we confirm against your available roof space.

  • What if I already have solar?

    That's fine. Existing solar doesn't disqualify you, and in most cases a battery makes an existing array considerably more valuable, since surplus generation is stored instead of exported at a low feed-in rate. Sites with existing solar are quoted as battery-only projects.

  • Will my site need extra work?

    Some sites do. A two-storey roof, a site that needs a lift or elevated work platform, and arrays that need tilt frames all add labour beyond a standard install. We check for those at the site assessment so they are priced in the quote rather than raised afterwards.

  • Can this be combined with other incentives?

    In some cases, yes. Smaller systems less than 100kwh capacity may be able to stack the BESS4 incentive with federal support. Eligibility depends on system size and the rules in force at the time of installation, so we confirm what applies to your specific project during assessment.

  • Why does inverter size affect my incentive?

    Eligible capacity is capped at four hours multiplied by your battery inverter capacity. If the inverter is undersized relative to the battery, part of your storage may not count toward the incentive. It's one of the reasons system design matters as much as headline battery capacity.

  • When do I need to install by?

    Installation must occur on or after 1 September 2026 to qualify. There's no advantage to waiting beyond that date, and lead times on commercial systems mean it's worth starting the assessment early.
